One of the most famous palaces of Uttar Pradesh, the 19th century Surath Bhawan, was built by the erstwhile royal family of Khairigarh – Singahi state.
Constructed on a small hillock between 1880 A.D. and 1891 A.D., its design is a unique specimen of Indo – Sarasenic style of revival architecture, inspired by the Chateaus of Europe .The entire palace complex including the mesmerizing Ma Kali temple is nestled amidst acres of verdant gardens and open grounds.
In its hey days distinguished guests who enjoyed the hospitality of this magnificent property included the Prince of Wales, United States Senators, Duke of Connaught, Viceroy Lord Curzon, cricketer Douglas Jardine, Governor Sir Harcourt Butler, explorer Arthur Stannard Vernay, several prominent national politicians, religious heads, princely rulers plus research teams from National Geographic & B.B.C., all attracted by the teeming biodiversity, rich wildlife and picturesque scenery of the surrounding jungles of Terai.
